Switchbot’s New Smart Lock Has Facial Recognition

SwitchBot just unveiled its new and improved Lock Ultra Vision Combo, a smart lock and keypad with 3D facial recognition and a triple-battery system that’s faster, smarter, and safer than previous generations. This new ultra lock offers several improvements over the original lock and Lock Pro, like being 122% faster and supporting 18 different unlock methods.

Traditional smart locks usually replace your deadbolt, and some fancier models require difficult installation processes and lots of labor. Thankfully, the all-new SwitchBot Lock Ultra Vision is the first retrofittable smart lock to feature 3D facial recognition. Meaning you don’t have to replace your deadbolt and keys. The company says it’ll work with 99% of existing locks. Additionally, you can get an even better experience with the Vision keypad. Here’s what you need to know.

The SwitchBot Lock Ultra Vision Combo isn’t cheap, as it’ll arrive for $249 at the SwitchBot website or on Amazon. However, that steep price tag gets you a modern smart lock that’s extremely fast, secure, durable, and even features a triple-redundant battery system so you’re never stuck without a way inside your home.

First, this new smart lock features 3D facial recognition, which is a game-changer for anyone who’s tried it. The Lock Ultra Vision Combo scanner employs over 30,000 infrared points to securely recognize a face and unlock the door nearly instantaneously.

The company said in its announcement, “Our Lock Ultra Vision employs over 30,000 infrared points to create a high-resolution, millimeter-level facial map for authentication. Recognition is instantaneous—within one second—and highly secure, with a false recognition rate of less than 0.0001% and facial maps secured locally with an AES-128 bank-level encryption system.”

And when you don’t want to use a facial ID, you can unlock the door with a fingerprint, PIN, NFC card, or the companion app. In fact, there are 18 different ways to unlock your door, whether that’s auto-unlock using your location, a widget on your phone, voice controls, and more. This one system does it all.

For starters, the main rechargeable battery should last 9–12 months per charge, and it’s easy to pull out when it’s getting low.

However, an additional backup CR123A cell (good for five years) will ensure the deadbolt flips open if you forget to charge the main battery. And as a last resort, there’s a third electrolytic unlock battery that’ll give you five unlocks in case of emergencies. Now that’s peace of mind!

SwitchBot also mentioned that its new Lock Ultra Vision Combo is 122% faster than previous generations, over 10% more durable, no longer has a gap between the door and unit, and measures as low as 20 dB while unlocking.
